A closed roller shutter puts a locked aluminium barrier on the outside of your window, so the glass is no longer the first thing anyone has to get through. It will not make a house impossible to enter, but it makes a forced entry slow, loud and very obvious from the street.
What actually stops someone at a window
Most opportunistic break ins are quick. Someone tries a back window, a laundry window or a side door away from the street, and if it does not open in a couple of minutes they move on.
A shutter takes that option off the table. There is no glass to break, nothing to lever quietly, and no way to look in and decide whether the room is worth the effort in the first place.
The look of the house from the street counts for something as well. A row of shutters says the place has been thought about, and that on its own moves attention along to an easier target.
Where the strength comes from
The curtain of slats is only part of the story. The bottom rail is heavier than the slats and locks down into the guide rails, and the slats run in those rails for the full height so the curtain cannot be pushed in or pulled out at the edges.
Guide rail depth is the detail that matters and the one nobody looks at in a showroom. The further the slat sits into the rail, the harder the curtain is to force sideways out of the track.
Slat gauge and profile change the picture too. A heavier profile resists being bent or prised at the bottom rail, which is the first place anyone would try, and it rattles less in the wind as a bonus.
Because these shutters are motorised, there is nothing sitting on the outside wall to grab or work on. The motor holds the curtain down in the closed position, and everything that drives it sits inside the headbox.
Which windows to cover first
Start with the openings you cannot see from the street or from a neighbour. Side passage windows, the laundry, the back of the garage and any ground floor bedroom window sitting behind a solid fence.
Sliding doors onto a back deck are worth doing too. A slider is the biggest and easiest opening in most Sydney houses, and one shutter covers the whole thing.
Upstairs windows over a flat roof, a carport or a pergola get forgotten. If you could climb up to it in thongs on a Sunday, so can someone else.
Going away for a week
Timers earn their keep here. Setting the shutters to close in the evening and open again in the morning while you are away makes the house look lived in, which is worth as much as the barrier.
A house with every shutter down for a week tells the street that nobody is home. Movement tells it the opposite, and that is free once the motors are in.
What roller shutters will not fix
They cover windows, not the doors you walk through every day, and they do nothing about a weak front door lock or a garage left open. They are one layer, and they work best alongside decent locks, sensor lights and a dog with an opinion.
They are also not a substitute for a security screen where you want the opening used, with air coming through and insects kept out. Different job, different product.
The install decides how well it holds
Fixings do most of the work. Into solid brick or brick veneer, masonry anchors through the guide rails and into the brick itself is straightforward. Over the opening you are often fixing into a timber lintel or a header, which needs the correct fastener and enough of them.
Fixing into render, mortar joints or soft old brick alone is where installs go weak, and you cannot tell from the outside once the job is finished. Anyone measuring your windows should be looking at the wall as closely as the opening.
