How motorised roller shutters work
An electric roller shutter has a tubular motor sitting inside the barrel in the headbox. Press the remote or the wall switch and the motor winds the shutter down the guide rails and back up again. There is no strap on the wall and nothing to wind by hand. You can run one shutter on its own, run a whole room together, or drop the front of the house off one button.
Control is up to you. A handheld remote suits most homes, with a channel for each shutter and one that does the lot. A wall switch in a standard plate beside the window is better if remotes go missing in your house. Phone control runs through a hub and adds timers. You can have more than one of these on the same shutter, so a remote and a wall switch can both work it.

Where motorised shutters earn their keep
West facing rooms are the reason most people motorise. Through a Sydney summer the sun comes around onto that side of the house from early afternoon and sits on the glass until sunset. If you are at work you are not home to close anything. A timer brings the shutter down at two, the sun never gets onto the glass, and you walk in at six to a room that has not been baking all day.
Motors also fix the windows nobody bothers with. Upstairs bedrooms, a window behind the bed, a tall one over the stairwell. Those are the ones that get closed once and left. Motors make the measure more important, not less. The headbox has to be deep enough for the barrel with a motor inside it, the guide rails have to be plumb or the shutter pulls to one side on the way down, and a hard wired motor needs the cable run worked out before anything gets closed up. We sort that on site with you instead of guessing off a photo.

Remote, switch or phone
Most homes run a handheld remote with a channel for each shutter and one that moves them all. A wall switch sits in a standard plate near the window and suits people who lose remotes down the side of the lounge. Phone control runs through a hub, adds timers and lets you check them from work.
Timers for the afternoon sun
A timer closes the shutter before the sun gets onto the glass rather than after, which is the part that matters. Set the west side to come down early afternoon in summer and go back up in the evening. Plenty of people flip it in winter and leave them up through the day for the warmth.
Battery or hard wired
A hard wired motor runs off mains power and needs a licensed electrician and a point near the window. It suits a new build or a renovation while the wall is still open. A battery motor charges up and needs no cabling, so it is usually the answer on a finished brick or rendered wall.
What to decide before you order
Power. Hard wired if the wall is open or you have a point nearby, battery if you do not want cable chased into finished render or brickwork.
Control. Remote, wall switch, phone, or a mix. Think about who in the house has to use it, not just you.
Grouping. Decide which shutters should move together. Running all the west facing windows as one group is usually more useful than a separate button for each.
Fit. Check the depth of your window reveal. A shallow reveal means a face fit on the outside wall, and that affects how the headbox sits above the window.
Colour. Standard colours cost less than special finishes, and most people match the shutter to the gutters or the window frames.

Common questions
How are electric roller shutters controlled?
A handheld remote is standard. You can add a wall-mounted switch beside the window, one remote that runs every shutter on the house as a group, or a hub so you get app control and timers. Sun and wind sensors are available too, if you want a shutter closing itself on a hot afternoon while you are out.
What happens to an electric shutter in a blackout?
It stays where it is. The motor holds the shutter in position, so a closed shutter will not fall and an open one will not drop. These are motor-driven units, so there is no crank handle. If you need a particular window openable during an outage, tell us at the measure and we will work around it.
Do I need an electrician?
Usually yes, for the power. Our installers fit the shutter, run the cable and commission the motor and remote. A licensed electrician makes the final connection where a hard-wired feed or a new power point is needed. If there is already a point near the head of the window, the job is simpler. We flag it at the quote.
How long do the motors last?
A quality tubular motor is a sealed unit doing a short job twice a day, so it lasts many years in normal use. Keeping the guide rails clear matters more than anything else. Grit and leaf litter in the rail make the shutter drag, which forces the motor to work harder than it was ever built to.
Can electric shutters go on an existing house?
Yes, most of our shutter work is retrofit. The two things to sort out are where the headbox sits above the window and how power gets to it. We check the fixing surface, the eaves overhang and the cable run on site. Some openings need the box surface mounted, and we show you that before you commit.
