Where roller shutters earn their keep

Window size and how many
Size is the biggest single factor. A wide opening like a sliding door needs a heavier slat profile and a bigger barrel, and a bigger barrel needs a deeper headbox above it. Quantity pulls the other way. Six windows done in one visit costs less per window than one on its own, because the setup and travel are shared.
Motor and power type
Every shutter we fit is motorised. What moves the price is how it gets its power. A hard wired motor needs a licensed electrician and a point near the window, which suits a new build or a wall that is still open. A battery motor needs no cabling, which is usually the answer on a finished brick or rendered wall.
How it fits to the wall
A reveal fit sits inside the window opening and needs enough depth for the guide rails and the headbox. A face fit mounts on the outside wall and is used where the reveal is too shallow. Brick, render, cladding and timber all take different fixings, and anything above ground level adds labour and access gear.
What to decide before you order
Size. Measure the widest and tallest point of each opening you want covered, and count them up. That gives us something to work with before anyone comes out.
Power. A hard wired motor needs a licensed electrician and a point near the window. A battery motor needs neither, which suits a finished wall you do not want cut into.
Fit. Have a look at how deep your window reveal is. A shallow reveal usually means a face fit, and that changes how the shutter sits and how it looks from the street.
Slats. Perforated slats let light and air through with the shutter down. Solid slats block it. The choice changes the price a little and the room a lot.
Colour. Standard colours cost less than special finishes. Most people match the shutter to the gutters, the fascia or the window frames.

What affects the cost of roller shutters?
Size first. A shutter is priced on the area of the opening, so a wide patio door sits well above a small bedroom window. After that it is the number of openings, the motor and control you pick, whether the colour is a standard or a custom powder coat, how hard the access is, and what we are fixing into.
Is it better value to do all the windows at once?
Usually. One measure, one delivery and one install visit spreads the setup across the whole job instead of repeating it for each window. Ordering every opening together also avoids a slight colour batch difference later. If you can only do part of the house now, start with the west and north-facing bedrooms.
Does the motor choice change the price?
It does. A remote-operated tubular motor is the starting point. Add a wall switch, a group controller for several shutters, a smart home hub, or a sun and wind sensor, and the cost steps up with each one. Decide on app or voice control now, because adding the hub later is dearer than including it.
Why do quotes for the same window come back so differently?
Slat thickness, motor brand, guide rail profile and headbox size all vary, and none of that is obvious from one line on a quote. Access and fixing are the other half of it. A first-floor window over a tiled roof takes longer and needs different gear. Ask what slat and what motor is in the price.
How long from quote to installed?
Shutters are made to your measurements once you approve the order, so allow a few weeks for manufacture and delivery, then a booked install day. Custom colours add time on top. If you want them before summer hits, get the measure done early, because the run into Christmas is the busiest stretch of the year.
