How motorised roller blinds actually work
The part most people get wrong is the wiring. They assume motorised roller blinds mean pulling up plaster and getting a sparky in. Most of the ones we fit run on a battery motor that sits inside the roller tube, out of sight, and charges off a lead a few times a year depending on how much you run it. Nothing gets cut into the wall. If you are building or renovating you can hardwire instead, and that is worth doing while the walls are still open.
We make the blind the motor goes into, and that matters more than it sounds. A motor inside the tube needs the tube sized for it, the brackets set for the extra weight, and the fabric cut square so the roll tracks straight over thousands of cycles. A blind that is 3mm out of square will creep to one side and start rubbing the reveal. We cut and assemble in our own factory in Sydney, so the tube, the fabric and the motor are matched before the blind leaves the bench.

Where a motor is worth the money
Motors earn their keep in the spots you cannot reach, or cannot be bothered reaching. Windows over a stairwell void, which turn up in most of the newer two storey homes through the Shire. Glass above a kitchen bench. A window behind a bed or a lounge you have to climb over. Anywhere a chain would hang in a walkway with small kids around.
Wide windows are the other one. A wide blockout on a chain is heavy work, so people stop pulling it and the west sun cooks the room all afternoon. On a motor the same blind runs off a button, so it actually gets used. Put a few blinds on one channel and a whole row of glass drops at once, which is the difference between a room you can sit in at four o clock and a room you avoid.

The measure, the making and the install end up sitting with three different businesses. Remote, switch or phone
Most people start with a handheld remote. One channel per blind, or a group channel that runs a whole room off one button. A wall switch suits a spot you walk past anyway. Phone control works through a hub, which also lets you set times so the blinds run on their own.
Battery or hardwired
Battery motors sit inside the tube and charge off a lead, so there is no wiring and no electrician. Hardwired motors run off mains power and never need charging, but the cable has to be there before the plaster goes on. New builds and renovations are the easy time to hardwire.
Where a motor pays off
High windows over a stairwell, glass above a kitchen bench, a blind behind a lounge you have to climb over. Wide blinds too. A big blockout on a chain gets heavy and the chain wears. A motor lifts the same blind with no pull and no chain hanging down the wall.
What to sort out before you order
Power. Battery if the walls are closed up. Hardwired if you are building or renovating and can get the cable in first.
Control. Remote only, a wall switch at the door, or a hub so you can use your phone and put the blinds on a timer.
Roll direction. Standard roll drops the fabric close to the glass. Reverse roll pushes it out a little, which you want when the blind has to clear a window handle or a deep architrave.
Reveal depth. The brackets need somewhere to sit. If the reveal is shallow, or you are doubling a sheer with a blockout, we face fix above the window instead.
Fabric. Blockout, light filtering or sheer, based on what the room is used for. Bedrooms and media rooms usually want blockout with the side gaps kept tight.

Common questions
Do motorised roller blinds have to be hard wired?
Not always. Rechargeable lithium motors drop into the tube and charge from a lead every several months, which suits a retrofit where you cannot get power into the wall. Hard-wired motors are the better pick for a new build, a high window, or a bank of blinds you want running together. We talk through both at the measure.
How do you charge a battery motor in a high window?
Most rechargeable motors take a lead at one end of the tube, so you need to reach the blind with a ladder or lift it off the bracket. For a stairwell or a raked ceiling we either run a permanent low-voltage lead to a plug pack, or fit a solar panel on the glass. Sort that out before the install, not after.
Can I run my blinds from my phone?
Yes, with a hub added to the motor system. The hub sits on your Wi-Fi and gives you app control, timers, and sunrise or sunset schedules. Most of our motors pair with the common smart home and voice assistant systems as well. Without a hub you still get a handheld remote and a wall switch, which is all a lot of people want.
Are motorised blinds noisy?
A quality motor is a low hum for the few seconds the blind is moving, quieter than a ceiling fan. Cheap ones rattle inside the tube and you hear it through the wall in a bedroom. Tube size matters just as much. A wide blind on an undersized tube will shudder, and that sounds worse than the motor itself.
What happens if the power goes out?
Battery motors keep working as normal, since they are not on mains power. A hard-wired blind stops where it is until the power returns, and it holds position rather than dropping. Your remote keeps its settings either way, so nothing needs reprogramming. Timers pick up again once the hub is back on your network.
