How the arms and the fabric work
A folding arm awning bolts to the wall above your door or window. Two folding arms sit under spring tension, and as the fabric rolls off the tube those arms push straight out over the paving. Nothing touches the ground, so there are no posts or legs to walk around. Wind it back in and the whole thing tucks against the wall.

Why west facing patios need one
Morning sun sits high in the east and nobody complains about it. By two or three in the afternoon it has dropped low in the west, and it comes in under the eave, across the paving and straight through the sliding door. A fixed roof does very little at that angle. An arm reaching out over the paving does.
That is the difference between an alfresco area you use and one you look at. Shade over the table through the afternoon means you eat outside in January. The same shade keeps the glass behind it cooler, so the lounge room is not cooking by the time you get home.

Who measures it, who fits it
Our roller blinds are made in our own factory here in Sydney, Australian made. Awnings are not, and we will not pretend otherwise. We supply them and we install them, and 25 years in the trade tells us which ones stand up to the weather here and which ones sag after two summers.
Fixing is where an awning is won or lost. Rolled out, an awning pulls down and out on that wall, hard. Into solid brick it goes through to the brick itself, never the mortar joint and never the render. On a timber wall it has to land on the studs, or on a timber put in behind the cladding for the job.

How far it reaches, and how wide it runs
Width is the run of wall you have to work with. Projection is how far the arms reach out from it. Get the projection right and the shade lands on the table at the hour you actually sit there. Too short and you are still squinting. Both get measured against the paving.
Crank handle, or a motor and remote
A manual awning winds out on a crank handle and there is very little on it to go wrong. A motor runs off a remote or a wall switch, which suits a wide awning or one you open every day. Add a wind sensor and a motorised awning rolls itself back in when it starts gusting.
Acrylic canvas or an open mesh
Acrylic canvas is a solid fabric. It holds its colour in the sun and throws a proper dark shade underneath. Mesh is knitted and open, so it cuts the sun while letting some light and breeze through, which sits lighter over a deck. Both come in a decent range of colours.
What to work out before you order
Where. The wall has to take the load, so we look at brick, render or timber cladding first. Reach. Projection decides whether the shade covers the table or stops short of it. Fabric. Canvas for solid shade, mesh for a lighter feel and some breeze. Operation. Crank handle on a smaller awning, a motor and remote where you open it daily.
You do not need answers to any of that yet. We come out, look at which way the place faces, check what is behind the wall and measure the paving. Then you get a written quote with the fabric and the projection on it, and nothing to pay if you decide against it.

Common questions
How far out from the wall can a folding arm awning go?
Projection is how far the awning reaches out, width is how far it runs along the wall. The projection can never be more than the width, or the arms have nowhere to fold. West facing patios need more projection than you would think, because late sun comes in low and slides straight under a shallow awning.
Is a crank handle or a motor better on an awning?
A crank is simple and there is less to go wrong, but a wide awning takes a fair few turns to wind all the way out. A motor makes it a one button job, which matters if you only put the awning out when you remember. Motors also take a wind sensor. Power near the fixing point is the thing to sort first.
What is the difference between acrylic canvas and mesh awning fabric?
Acrylic canvas is a solid woven fabric. It throws a proper shadow, holds its colour in Sydney sun and sheds light rain. Mesh is a knitted screen that lets some light and air through, so the space under it feels brighter and less like a tent on a hot day. For a dining table outside, most people go canvas.
Can I leave a folding arm awning out in wind or rain?
No. There are no legs on the ground, so the whole load runs back through the arms into the wall, and wind gets under the fabric and lifts it. A wind sensor on a motorised awning rolls it in on its own once gusts hit the set point. Light rain runs off a sloped canvas. Heavy rain pools and stretches it.
Can a folding arm awning be fixed to any wall?
It needs something solid behind the bracket. Solid brick takes chemical anchors well. Brick veneer means hitting the timber frame behind the skin, or bolting through to a structural member, because the outer brick alone will not hold the load. Timber fascia and rafters work if they are sound. Rendered cladding needs a bracket taken back to the frame.
