How the weave does the work
A sunscreen is a woven fabric with small gaps left between the threads. The weave knocks the glare down and holds a good part of the heat off the glass, and you can still see the street and the back yard through it. The part that catches people out is what happens after dark. During the day you get privacy because it is brighter outside than in. At night, once your lights are on, that flips and people on the footpath can see into the room. If a room needs privacy at night, the sunscreen gets paired with a blockout.
We make our roller blinds in our own factory in Sydney. When we talk about the weave, the tube size or which way the fabric rolls, we are talking about parts we cut and put together ourselves.

Where sunscreen blinds earn their keep
West facing windows are the main one. A lounge room in Kogarah or Sans Souci that cops the sun from about two o clock gets hot and the TV washes out. A sunscreen keeps the view over the street and takes the sting out of the light without making the room dark in the middle of the afternoon.

We make them, we do not buy them in
A lot of blind companies are just wholesale blind retailers. They buy all their blinds in and put their margin on. The job never passes through their hands. We have been making blinds for over 25 years and our roller blinds are made in our own factory in Sydney, 100 per cent Australian made.
That matters most when a window is out of square, which is most older houses around here. A blind gets cut to the narrowest measurement across the opening. If the opening is wider at the bottom than at the top, the gap down the side grows as the blind comes down. We take the measurement, we cut the fabric and the tube to it, and if something needs changing we change it here instead of sending it back through a supplier.

Glare down, view kept
You still see out. The weave cuts the hard light off the glass so you can watch the TV or read a screen in the middle of the afternoon without the room going dark. Lighter fabrics hold more of the view. Darker fabrics cut glare harder and read clearer against a bright sky.
Heat off the glass
Most of the heat in a west facing room comes through the window in the last few hours of daylight. A sunscreen stops a fair part of it at the glass before it gets into the room, so the air conditioner is not fighting the sun on its own all afternoon.
Daytime privacy, not night
In daylight the outside is brighter than the inside, so people on the footpath see the fabric and you see through it. After dark with the lights on it works the other way and the room is visible from the street. Bedrooms and front rooms usually need a blockout as well.
What to sort out before you order
Fabric colour. Dark fabrics give the sharpest view out and the best glare control. Light fabrics bounce more heat back but you see the weave more and the view is hazier.
How tight the weave is. A tighter weave gives you more privacy and less view. A more open weave gives more view and less privacy. We bring samples so you can hold them against your own window before you decide.
Inside or outside the reveal. Inside looks neater but the reveal needs enough depth for the bracket and the rolled fabric to clear the architrave and any winder handle. Outside the reveal covers the gaps better and blocks more side light.
Roll direction. A back roll keeps the fabric close to the glass and hides the tube from inside. A standard front roll clears a deep sill or a handle. We set this window by window, not house by house.
Chain or motor. Chains are simple and there is nothing to power. Motors suit high windows, wide blinds and anything sitting behind furniture. It has to be decided before we make, because the bracket and the tube are built for one or the other.

Common questions
What openness factor should I choose for a sunscreen blind?
Lower numbers block more. A three percent fabric is dense, cuts glare hard and holds good privacy in daylight, while a ten percent lets you see out clearly but does less on heat. West-facing living rooms usually land somewhere around three to five percent. Hold the samples against your own glass before you decide.
Can people see through a sunscreen blind from outside?
In daylight, barely. The mesh reads as a solid panel from the street while you still see out from inside. After dark it flips, so anyone outside sees into a lit room. If the window faces a footpath or a neighbour’s deck, add a blockout on a double bracket for night use and leave the sunscreen for the day.
Will a sunscreen blind stop my furniture fading?
It slows it down. A sunscreen cuts a large share of the UV and all of the direct sun off your floor, which is what does the visible damage to timber and upholstery. Nothing short of a fully covered window stops fading altogether. A denser weave, and a blind that runs the full width of the glass, help most.
Are sunscreen blinds any good at keeping heat out?
They are the best roller option for it, and better again if you shade the glass outside as well. The mesh reflects and absorbs sun before it becomes heat in the room. Lighter colours reflect more, darker colours give a crisper view out. On a west-facing wall we often suggest a light exterior with a dark interior.
How do I clean a sunscreen blind?
Lower it fully, then wipe both sides with a soft cloth and warm water. No detergent, no scrubbing. Dust lifts off a mesh easily with a vacuum brush on low suction. Leave the blind down until it is completely dry before you roll it up, otherwise the damp fabric marks where it presses against itself.
