Why outside the window is the whole point
An internal blind stops light. It does not stop much heat. By the time the sun has come through the glass the heat is already in the room, and a blind on the inside holds it there between the fabric and the window. That gap gets hot. Anyone who has put their hand behind a closed blind on a February afternoon knows the feeling.
An outdoor roller shutter sits on the outside of the window. The sun lands on the slats instead of the glass, and most of that heat never gets past them. The shutter rolls into a headbox above the opening and runs in a guide rail on each side, so the sun cannot get around the edges the way it does past an internal blind.

Where external shutters earn their keep
West facing windows, again. The Sydney afternoon sun sits low from about two o clock through summer and comes in under the eaves, which is the point where an awning or an eave stops helping. Outside, not inside
The shutter is fitted to the outside of the window, in front of the glass. That is the whole reason it works on heat. The sun is stopped before it gets through, rather than being trapped between a blind and the window with nowhere to go.
Built for the weather
External shutters live outdoors and the slats are aluminium. Rain and wind are what they are made for. Run them down before you head away for the weekend and the glass is covered. Run them up and they sit in the headbox above the window, out of the way.
Privacy without the dark
The shutter stops wherever you like, so you can drop it to eye level and leave it. The bottom half of the window is covered and the top half still brings light in. Perforated slats go further and let light through the shutter itself while it is closed.
What to decide before you order
Position. Outside the window is the point, but there is still a call between face fixing to the wall and fitting into the reveal. The reveal needs the depth to take the headbox.
Guide rails. They run down both sides of the window and the shutter sits in them. What they fix into matters, since a rendered wall has to be fixed through to the brick behind it.
Slats. Perforated lets light and air through with the shutter down. Solid blocks it.
Motor. Hard wired to a switch where a cable can reach the window, battery where it cannot.
Colour. These sit on the outside of the house, so most people match the window frames or the gutters.

Common questions
Do outdoor roller shutters keep a room cooler?
Yes, more than anything you fit inside. An external shutter stops the sun before it hits the glass, so the heat never gets into the room. On a west-facing bedroom the difference on a hot afternoon is obvious. Closed at night in winter it works the other way, holding a layer of still air against the glass.
How do external shutters hold up in wind and rain?
Well, because the slats sit in a guide rail on each side and cannot flap about. The rails shed water and the aluminium slats are roll-formed and powder coated. Near the coast we use stainless fixings. Keep the guide rails clear of leaves and grit and the shutter keeps running quietly for years.
Can I still see out with the shutters down?
Partly. Most slats have small punched holes along the top edge, so with the shutter fully down you get a filtered view and a bit of airflow. Stopping the motor just short of closed leaves a gap at the bottom for light and breeze. Fully closed with solid slats, it is dark and private.
Where do the motor and the cabling go?
The motor sits inside the top roll, and the cable runs out of the headbox into the wall or down beside the guide rail in a conduit. You need power near the head of the opening. On a retrofit we plan that run at the measure, so there is no surprise cable stapled across your brickwork.
Are outdoor shutters better than outdoor blinds for a patio?
They do different jobs. A shutter covers a window opening and gives you blockout, heat control and security. An outdoor blind covers a much wider alfresco span and keeps the area usable with mesh or clear PVC. If you want a window protected, go shutter. If you want a deck enclosed, go outdoor blind.
