How a plantation shutter is put together
A plantation shutter is a timber or PVC frame with wide blades set into it, and panels that hinge or run on a track. The blades tilt together on a rod, or on a tilt bar hidden in the back of the panel. Blade widths run 63mm, 89mm and 114mm. The wider the blade, the fewer of them sit across the window, so you see more of the view when they are open.

Where a shutter beats a blind
Light control is the main one. Tilt the blade over a few degrees and the glare comes off the television without shutting the room down. Tilt it right over and the room goes dim. You are not picking between a blind up or a blind down, you set the light where you want it and leave it there.
The other reason is that a shutter is a fixed piece of joinery, not fabric on a roller. Nothing hangs beside the window, so there is no cord or chain in a child’s bedroom. Day to day, dust comes off the blades with a dry cloth, and a PVC blade will take a damp one.

Supplied, measured and installed
Straight up, we do not build shutters. Roller blinds we do, in our own Sydney factory, Australian made from the tube out. Shutters we supply and install, and after 25 years in window coverings we are particular about which ones we put our name to.
What we control is the measure and the fit. Reveals in Sydney houses are out of square somewhere, and a shutter shows that up faster than a blind does. We measure the reveal at the top, the middle and the bottom, check the depth for the frame, then order to the tightest of those figures. Our own installers hang it.

Blade width changes how much you see out
63mm blades suit small windows, bathrooms and anywhere a wide blade would look heavy. 89mm is the width most people land on, and it works nearly everywhere in a house. 114mm goes on big windows and stacked panels, because there is less blade in the way once they are open.
Hinged, sliding or bi-fold panels
Hinged panels swing out on the frame and suit a standard window. Sliding panels run in a top and bottom track, which works across a wide opening where a swinging panel would catch the furniture. Bi-fold panels fold back flat against the jamb, so a door you use every day still opens properly.
PVC for wet rooms, basswood elsewhere
PVC blades are built around an aluminium core and do not mind steam or a splash, so they go in bathrooms, laundries and over the kitchen sink. Basswood is lighter and takes a painted or stained finish, which suits living rooms and bedrooms where the blade stays dry.
What to sort out before you order
Room. Wet areas take PVC, dry rooms can have basswood. Blade. 63mm on small windows, 89mm as the general pick, 114mm where the glass is big. Panels. Hinged on a normal window, sliding across a wide opening, bi-fold where a door has to stay usable. Frame. Inside the reveal when it is deep enough, otherwise face fixed onto the architrave.
None of that has to be settled before you call. We measure the windows, hold a sample blade up against the light in the actual room, and tell you what we would fit in our own place. You get a written quote and there is no charge if you leave it there.

Common questions
What blade width should I choose for plantation shutters?
Three widths cover most homes. 63mm suits small windows and narrow panels where a wide blade would look heavy. 89mm is the one we fit most, a fair balance of view and coverage. 114mm gives the biggest gap between blades and the clearest outlook, and it works best on tall glass in a living area.
Basswood or PVC shutters, which one should I get?
Basswood is light, takes a painted or stained finish well, and gives you the slimmest frames and stiles. PVC is the one to use anywhere water and steam reach the blades, so a bathroom, a laundry, or the window over the kitchen sink. PVC is heavier, so wide panels need extra hinges or a track.
Will plantation shutters make a bedroom properly dark?
Darker than bare glass, never fully dark. Even closed up, the blades sit inside a frame and light creeps through at each pivot and around the edge of the panel. Tilting the blades down towards the floor throws what light does get in onto the carpet. For a blacked out bedroom, run a blockout blind behind the shutter.
How do I pick between hinged, sliding and bi-fold panels?
Hinged panels swing into the room and suit windows up to roughly a metre and a half wide. Sliding panels run on a top and bottom track, so nothing swings out over a walkway or a benchtop. Bi-fold panels hinge together and stack to one side, which is what we usually fit across a wide sliding door.
How much reveal depth do shutters need?
Around 65 to 75 millimetres of clear depth lets the frame and blades sit inside the reveal without the blades touching the glass or fouling a window handle. Less than that and we face fix the frame onto the architrave, or build the shutter out on a subframe. We check depth, handles and the sill at the measure.
