Two blinds on one bracket
A double roller blind is two separate blinds running on one bracket at the same window. Front and back, each with its own tube, its own fabric and its own chain or motor. Nearly everyone runs a sunscreen on one and a blockout on the other. The sunscreen does the day, cutting glare while you keep the view out. The blockout comes down at night for full dark. Sold as dual roller blinds or day night roller blinds, it is the same product.
The part people miss is depth. A double bracket sits the two rollers one behind the other, so you need roughly 100 to 120mm of reveal to fit the pair inside the window recess. Plenty of Sydney windows do not have it. That is not a problem, the blind just gets face fixed to the wall above the opening instead, with the architrave and any window handles allowed for. Because we build the blinds ourselves, we set the brackets to suit what is actually there.

Where a double roller blind pays off
Front rooms are the obvious one. A lounge facing the street in Kogarah or Hurstville has people walking past all day, and a single blockout means you either sit in the dark or sit on display. A sunscreen keeps the light and the view out while stopping anyone seeing in during daylight. After dark that flips, because a sunscreen lit from inside shows the room to the street, so the blockout takes over.
Bedrooms are the other one. East facing rooms near the water cop sun early, and a bedroom on the street side picks up headlights half the night. A blockout with a white backing knocks all of that out. Shift workers and anyone with young kids notice it the first morning. The sunscreen still does the daytime job in the same window, so you are not hauling a blockout up and down just to make the bed.

Built in our factory, not bought in
Steve, who owns the place, says it straight. A lot of blind companies are just wholesale blind retailers, they buy all their blinds in and put their margin on. On a double blind that shows up quickly, because there are two of everything and twice as much to get wrong before it reaches your window.

Picking the sunscreen openness
Sunscreen fabric is rated by openness. One to three per cent is a tight weave, so you get strong glare control and less view out. Five per cent is the common middle ground. Ten per cent keeps more view and more light. Tighter weaves give better daytime privacy, and none of them give any privacy after dark.
Blockout and light gaps
A blockout stops light through the cloth, but light still runs around the edges. Fitted inside a reveal you will see a few millimetres down each side and a line at the sill. Face fixing above the window with a wider blind covers most of that. If a room has to be properly dark, tell us at the measure.
Chains, sides and motors
Both chains normally sit on the same side, one in front of the other, so you are not reaching across the window twice. They can be split if a wall return or a door handle is in the way. Motors suit tall windows and anything over a stairwell. Pick your chain side at the measure, it is set in the workshop.
What to decide before you order
Fabric pair. Usually a sunscreen at the back and a blockout at the front, though it can be swapped if you want the blockout closer to the glass. It changes how the two sit when both are down.
Openness. Three, five or ten per cent on the sunscreen. Lower means more daytime privacy and less view. Look at it in the actual room, not on a phone screen.
Reveal or face fix. Measure the depth of the window recess. Under about 100mm and the double bracket will not fit inside, so the blind goes on the face of the wall above.
Roll direction. Over roll drops the fabric away from the glass and shows the full width of the cloth. Under roll tucks it in behind the tube. On a double it matters more, because two fabrics and the reveal all have to clear each other.
Control. Chain on both, motor on both, or a chain on the sunscreen and a motor on the blockout. Sort the chain side out at the same time.

What exactly is a double roller blind?
Two blinds on one bracket set, running on separate tubes in front of each other. Usually a sunscreen or sheer at the back for daytime and a blockout at the front for night. You operate them independently, so one window covers both jobs. Because the pair shares a bracket, the finished look stays tidy.
How much space does a double blind need in the reveal?
Allow around 130 to 150 millimetres of depth for the two tubes and brackets, more again if you add a pelmet or cassette. Shallow reveals in older Sydney homes often will not take it, so we face fix above the window instead. We measure the reveal depth at the quote and tell you straight away which way it needs to go.
Is a double roller blind better than a day night blind?
They do a similar job in different ways. A double gives you two separate fabrics, so you choose exactly which sunscreen and which blockout you want. A day night blind is one striped fabric on a single tube. Doubles use more hardware and take more depth, and they give you proper darkness at night.
Can I have different colours on the two blinds?
Yes. Because we make them in our own Sydney factory, the front and back blinds are cut and assembled separately. You can run a charcoal sunscreen with an off-white blockout, or match both to the wall colour. Put the two fabrics side by side at the quote and look at them against your own glass in daylight.
Which blind goes at the front, the blockout or the sunscreen?
Blockout at the front, closest to the room, with the sunscreen behind it against the glass. That way the blockout can be made slightly wider to cover the light gap, and the sunscreen sits where it does its work on glare. Reverse the two and the blockout never sits flush, so you get light leaking down the sides.
