What the cassette is actually doing
Most people treat the cassette as a cover and leave it at that. It does two things worth paying for. It keeps dust off the rolled fabric, which is the part of a blind that collects the most and is the hardest to get at. And it closes the gap over the top of the blind, where light and heat slip past a plain roller. What it will not do on its own is stop light down the sides. That is what side channels are for, and they run into the cassette.
The size of the headbox is set by the window, not by a catalogue. A long drop puts more fabric on the tube, which makes a fatter roll and needs a bigger box to enclose it. We work that out here, because we make our roller blinds in our own factory in Sydney and cut the cassette to the blind rather than fitting the blind to a box that turned up in a carton.

Where a cassette is worth the extra
New builds and renovations are the obvious one. Where the plasterer has left a square set reveal, a bare tube and a pair of brackets look unfinished. Apartments through the Eastern Suburbs with floor to ceiling glass are the other, because a row of exposed rolls across a whole wall is the first thing you notice when you walk in.
It also helps in rooms that get a lot of dust. Anything facing a main road through St George, places near building work, upstairs rooms that stay shut most of the week. The fabric spends its life rolled up inside a box instead of sitting out in the open air.

Cut here, not bought in a box
A lot of blind companies are just wholesale blind retailers. They buy all their blinds in and put their margin on. With a cassette blind that is a real problem, because the box, the brackets and the tube all have to suit the one window, and a bought in unit comes in set sizes.

No roll on show
The tube, the fabric roll and the brackets all sit inside the box. From the room you see a straight line across the top of the window and the blind below it. On a wall of windows that matters more than on a single one, because every exposed roll shows a different diameter.
Dust stays off the roll
A blind that spends the day rolled up at the top of a window collects dust on the outside of the roll, then carries it down the glass the next time you drop it. A cassette puts a lid over that. It makes a real difference on main roads and near building sites.
Side channels cut light gaps
The cassette closes the top. Channels down both sides take care of the rest, holding the fabric edges so light does not run down the reveal. Bedrooms and media rooms are where people ask for them. They need the reveal to be straight, which we check while we measure.
What to settle before we make it
Reveal depth. A cassette is deeper than a plain bracket, so the reveal has to take the box and still let the fabric clear the glass and any handle. Shallow reveals get face fitted above the window instead.
Drop. A long drop puts more fabric on the tube. More fabric means a fatter roll and a bigger box, so a tall window and a short one on the same wall can end up with different cassette sizes unless we plan for it.
Channels or no channels. Put them on where you want the room dark. Leave them off where the blind is there for glare and a tidy finish.
Finish of the box. The cassette face is what you look at all day. Match it to the window frame or to the ceiling, and keep it the same across every window in the one room.
Fabric. Sunscreen, blockout, or both on a double. The cassette works over any of them, but the fabric changes the roll diameter, so it has to be locked in before we cut the box.

Common questions
What does a cassette do on a roller blind?
It is an aluminium headbox that wraps the rolled fabric, so you see a clean line instead of the tube and brackets. It also closes the gap above the blind, which is where a lot of light and warm air sneaks past. Cassettes come with a plain powder-coated front or a fabric-wrapped front to match the blind.
What is the difference between a cassette and a pelmet?
A cassette fully encloses the roll on the top, front and back, and the fabric runs out through a slot. A pelmet is a front and top cover only, open at the back against the glass. Cassettes block more light and keep dust off the roll. Pelmets are slimmer and often suit a shallow reveal better.
Do I need side channels as well as a cassette?
Only if you are chasing true darkness. A cassette closes the top gap, but light still spills down each side of the fabric. Adding side channels seals those edges and gets a bedroom close to blacked out. Most people fitting a living room stop at the cassette and are happy with how it looks and performs.
How much room does a cassette need above the window?
A standard cassette wants roughly 100 millimetres of clear height, more on a long drop where the roll builds up bigger. If your reveal is shallow, we face fix the cassette to the wall above the architrave instead. We measure the reveal and the drop at the quote so the roll never fouls inside the box.
Are cassette blinds worth it for a bedroom?
If you sleep late or work nights, yes. The top gap on a plain roller throws a bright band across the ceiling at dawn, and a cassette removes it. Add side channels and you are in proper darkness. In a room where you only want privacy, a plain roller is fine and looks neat on its own.
