What a roller shutter actually does
Most people picture a roller shutter as a blind that happens to sit outside. It works differently. The shutter rolls into a headbox above the window and runs down a guide rail on each side, so the glass is covered from the outside, edge to edge. That is why it does things an internal blind cannot do.
The other thing people get wrong is that a shutter is all or nothing. It is not. Stop it halfway and you still have a view out the bottom. Order perforated slats and light and air come through the shutter while it is down, so a bedroom can be shaded without being pitch black. Solid slats are there if you want the room properly dark.

Where a roller shutter earns its keep
West facing windows are the ones that cause trouble in Sydney. From about two in the afternoon through summer the sun comes in low and straight through the glass, and the room is still warm at ten at night. Same story for a bedroom on the western side of a first floor, where heat sits under the roof and has nowhere to go. A shutter on the outside keeps the sun off the glass in the first place.
Past heat, the everyday uses are noise, weather and privacy. Homes on a main road or near a train line notice the difference with the shutters down. Rain driving into a window during a southerly stays off the glass and the sill. On a tight block where the neighbour window looks straight into your lounge room, you can close down as far as you want and leave it there.

That matters on site. The measure decides whether the shutter face fixes onto the wall above the window or fits inside the reveal, and how much room the headbox needs at the top. A rendered wall has to be fixed through to the brickwork behind it, never into the render. Sorting that at the measure is what stops a problem on install day.

Heat stopped at the glass
The shutter sits outside the window, so the sun hits the slats instead of the glass. The glass stays cooler and the room takes longer to heat up. On a west facing room that cops the afternoon sun badly, it is the plainest fix available.
Light you can dial back
Run the shutter down as far as you want and stop it there. Perforated slats let some light and air through while the shutter is closed, which suits a bedroom you want shaded through the day. Solid slats block the lot if you sleep days and need it dark.
Motors and controls
Every shutter we fit is motorised. A hard wired motor runs off a cable to a switch and suits a window a sparky can reach. A battery motor suits a room where running a cable means cutting into a wall or ceiling. We work out which one suits each window at the measure.
What to decide before you order
Fit. Face fix on the wall above the window, or inside the reveal. The reveal has to be deep enough to take the headbox, so it gets measured before anything is ordered.
Slats. Perforated for light and airflow with the shutter down. Solid for a dark room.
Motor. Hard wired to a switch, or battery. It comes down to whether a cable can reach the window without opening up a wall.
Colour. Match the window frames, the gutters or the render. The shutter sits on the outside of the house, so it reads as part of the front of the place.
Windows. Plenty of homes only need the western side done. Work out which rooms actually cop the sun before you commit to the whole house.

Common questions
What do roller shutters actually do for a Sydney house?
Closed, an external shutter puts a solid aluminium barrier over your glass. It stops direct sun before it reaches the window, takes the edge off street noise, and makes a window much harder to get through. Most people fit them to west-facing bedrooms and to ground-floor windows on the street side.
Are your roller shutters manual or motorised?
Motorised only. Every shutter we supply and install runs on a tubular motor with a remote, a wall switch, or both. A motor is quieter, easier on a tall window, and it stops in the same place every time. There is no crank handle punched through your window frame and nothing to wind by hand.
Do you make the shutters yourselves?
No. We make our roller blinds in our own Sydney factory, but shutters we supply and install. We measure your openings, order the shutters to those sizes in your colour, and our own fitters put them on. That split is worth knowing, because the measuring and the fixing are where most shutter jobs go wrong.
How much noise do roller shutters cut?
Enough to notice on a busy road. The slats plus the air gap between the shutter and the glass knock the sharp edge off traffic and voices. They will not silence a main road. If noise is the main reason you are looking, say so at the measure and we will look at the window itself as well.
Will roller shutters fit my windows?
Most windows, yes, but the headbox needs somewhere to sit. Above the window is easiest, and on some homes we can tuck the box behind a fascia. The fixing substrate matters as much as the size. Brick, rendered block, fibre cement and timber each take a different fixing, and we check that on site before quoting.
