What a sheer roller blind actually does
The thing people get caught out by is night time. A sheer roller blind works on light. Through the day it cuts glare and knocks back heat while you can still see out, and nobody on the footpath sees much coming in. At night with the lights on inside it runs the other way, and the room reads clearly from the street. That is not a fault in the fabric, it is how every sheer behaves, which is why most living rooms end up with a blockout sitting behind the sheer.
Because we make them, the fabric is the real conversation. Sheer is lighter than blockout and it shows up a sloppy build. If the fabric is not cut dead square it telescopes on the tube and tracks off to one side within a few months. Light also passes through the hem and the seams, so the way a blind is finished is visible on a sheer in a way it never is on a blockout.

Where sheers earn their keep
Front rooms on a street are the main one. Plenty of houses through Kogarah, Carlton and the Shire have the good living room facing the road, and the choice has been to sit with the curtains shut or sit on display. A sheer gives you the afternoon back. You keep the light and the outlook, and the traffic and the footpath stop being part of the room.
The other one is a view. Homes and apartments through the Eastern Suburbs and down along the water get bought for what is out the window, and a blockout on its own means you either wear the glare or lose the water. A sheer takes the hard edge off the sun without dropping the room into the dark, and the view stays there behind it.

Most of the trade is wholesale blind retailers. Steve, who owns the place, says it straight. A lot of blind companies are just wholesale blind retailers, they buy all their blinds in and put their margin on. The measure, the making and the install sit with three different businesses. A sheer is the product where that shows up fastest, because every flaw in the build is backlit.

How sheer fabric behaves
Sheer fabric has an openness factor, which is how much of the weave is hole. A more open weave gives you more view and less privacy. A tighter weave does the reverse. Colour matters too. A dark sheer reads clearer looking out, a white one bounces more light back into the room.
Sheer and blockout together
A double bracket holds two tubes on the one set of brackets, sheer in front and blockout behind, or the other way around. You run the sheer through the day and drop the blockout at night. Two tubes need more depth in the reveal than one, so the measure decides it.
Where sheers work best
Living rooms on a street, where you want to sit there in the afternoon without the whole footpath looking in. Balcony doors and big glass where the view is the reason you bought the place. West facing rooms that cop hard sun from about three o clock onwards.
What to decide before you order
Openness. A more open weave keeps more of the view. A tighter weave gives more daytime privacy. Hold both up against your own window before you pick, the difference is obvious in the room and invisible in a photo.
Colour. Darker sheers cut glare harder and look out clearer. White and light greys throw more light back into the room and read softer from the street.
Single or double. Sheer on its own is a daytime blind. If the room is used at night, or it is a bedroom, plan on a blockout behind it in a double bracket.
Reveal depth. A double bracket carries two tubes, so it needs more depth than a single. Shallow reveals get face fixed onto the architrave or the wall above instead.
Square. Old cottages and rendered openings are rarely square. The blind stays level, so a crooked reveal shows as a wedge of light down one side. We measure the width at three heights and build to suit.

Common questions
Can people see in through a sheer roller blind at night?
Yes. Once your lights are on and it is dark outside, a sheer gives you very little privacy. During the day it works the other way, you see out and the street sees a hazy shape. For a front room facing the footpath, run the sheer with a blockout on a double bracket and pull the blockout down after dark.
What is the difference between a sheer roller blind and a sunscreen?
A sunscreen is a tight woven mesh built to knock back heat and glare while holding a clear view out. A sheer is a softer, more open fabric chosen for the light it lets through and the way it looks. If your main problem is a hot west-facing window, go sunscreen. If you want the light softened, go sheer.
Do sheer roller blinds cut any heat?
A little, not a lot. They diffuse direct sun so the room is less harsh and your floorboards and furniture take less of a hit, but the glass still conducts heat straight in. If the room bakes in the afternoon, the answer is a sunscreen with a low openness factor, an outdoor blind, or an awning over the window.
Are sheer blinds suitable for a bathroom?
Only if the glass is frosted or nothing overlooks you, because a sheer gives almost no privacy at night. For a bathroom we would normally use a blockout or a light-filtering fabric with a wipeable surface, since sheers hold moisture and mark easily. Do you make sheer roller blinds to measure?
Yes. Every roller blind we supply is made in our own Sydney factory to the exact width and drop of your window. Sheer fabrics are light, so we size the tube to the drop and keep the roll from telescoping on a wide window. Off-the-shelf sizes almost never sit properly in an Australian reveal.
