How a day night blind runs through the day
The common mix up is thinking the blockout fabric makes the room black. The fabric itself passes no light, but light still comes around the edges of the blind, down the sides of the reveal and over the top. You get a dark room, not a blacked out one. If you want closer to black, the blind goes outside the reveal or gets side channels.
The rest of it is simple. Two blinds run on the one headrail, a sunscreen for the day and a blockout for the night, each with its own chain. You pull down whichever one the hour calls for. We make both blinds and the headrail in our own factory in Sydney, so the pair is cut for the same window on the same measurement.

Where it fits into a normal day
Morning, you want the light in and the glare off the bench. The sunscreen goes down while the kids get ready and it stays there. Through the middle of the day in a west facing lounge it takes the heat off the glass and you can still see the yard. Nothing needs touching until dark.

Light in, glare out
The sunscreen handles the daylight hours. Glare comes off the screen and the bench, heat comes off the glass, and you keep the view down the street or over the yard. In most houses it sits down from breakfast until the sun drops and nobody touches it in between.
Dark room after dark
The blockout comes down once the lights are on. It stops the room being on display to the footpath and it keeps the street light and the neighbour sensor light out of the bedroom. The fabric passes no light, so how dark the room gets comes down to the gaps at the edges.
One window, one headrail
Both blinds share the one bracket set, so you drill once and the window keeps a single clean line across the top. The two tubes sit one behind the other, which pushes the front blind further off the wall than a single roller would. We check that clearance against handles and door swings before we build.
Decisions to make before we build
Which fabric goes in front. The blockout can run on the front tube or the back one. Front gives a tidier look with the blockout down at night. Back sits the blockout closer to the glass and tightens the light gap. We set it per window.
Blockout backing colour. What you see from the street at night is the back of the blockout fabric, not the side facing the room. Keeping the backing consistent makes a whole house frontage look right from the kerb.
Inside or outside the reveal. Inside is neater. Outside covers the sides and the top, which is what you want if a bedroom has to be properly dark. A double bracket needs more reveal depth than a single, so shallow reveals usually end up face fitted.
Chain sides. Two blinds means two chains. Most people put both on the same side. Split them if one blind gets used every day and the other one rarely moves.
Chain or motor. You can motorise one blind, both, or neither. Bedroom blockout on a motor with the sunscreen on a chain is a common mix.

Common questions
How does a day night blind actually work?
One fabric with alternating bands, a sheer stripe and a blockout stripe, running on a single tube. You line the bands up to let light through, or offset them so the blockout stripes close the gaps. It gives you two settings from one blind, which is handy where a reveal is too shallow to take a double.
Do day night blinds give full blockout at night?
No. Even with the bands closed, the fabric is a light filter rather than a true blockout, so you still get a glow through it. For a bedroom where you need real darkness, a blockout roller or a double blind is the honest answer. Day night suits living areas, studies and kitchens much better.
Is a day night blind the same thing as a zebra blind?
Same product, different name. You will see day night, zebra, banded and vision all used for a striped fabric on a single tube. What actually matters is the fabric quality, the bracket system and whether the blind is made to your measurements. Ask what the fabric is and how deep the bracket needs to be.
Can day night blinds be motorised?
Yes, the motor goes inside the tube exactly as it does on a standard roller. It helps on a wide window, because lining the bands up by hand takes a light touch and a motor stops in the same spot every time. Battery and hard-wired options both work. We set the upper and lower limits during commissioning.
Where do day night blinds work best in a house?
Front living rooms, dining areas and home offices, anywhere you switch between wanting light and wanting privacy through the day. They are a poor fit for bedrooms, and for west-facing glass that cooks all afternoon. In those spots a sunscreen and blockout combination does the job properly.
