What outdoor roller blinds actually do
Most people think an outdoor roller blind is an indoor blind in a heavier fabric. It is not. The fabric matters less than what holds the sides down. An outdoor blind with loose edges will flog itself to pieces in one Sydney westerly. The ones that last run in side channels, on a wire guide, or in a zip track that keeps the fabric under tension from the tube to the bottom rail.
We make our roller blinds in our own factory here in Sydney, so every blind is cut to your opening. Tube, fabric and guides, all sized for that spot. If a patio post is out of plumb, or the opening is 20mm wider at the top than it is at the bottom, we allow for it on the bench instead of packing it out with timber at your place on install day.

Where an outdoor roller blind earns its keep
Western sun is the main reason people ring us. From about two in the afternoon a west facing patio in the Shire or St George gets full sun straight in under the eaves, and the roof does nothing to stop it. A blind drops that heat before it reaches the glass, so the room behind stays cooler and the outdoor setting stops cooking. Rain off a southerly is the other one. A blind on the windward side turns a wet balcony back into somewhere you can sit.
Closer to the water at Cronulla, Brighton or Coogee, salt air is what kills the hardware. Powder coated brackets and stainless fixings hold up. Plain steel does not. Wind matters just as much. A wide opening on a first floor balcony catches far more air than the same blind at ground level, so it wants a heavier tube and a guide the fabric cannot lift out of.

Steve, who owns the place, puts it plainly. A lot of blind companies are just wholesale blind retailers, they buy all their blinds in and put their margin on. You get whatever the wholesaler had in the rack that week, and when something is not right you are waiting on a third party to sort it out.

Fabrics built for outside
Outdoor fabrics fall into two camps. Mesh lets the breeze and some view through while cutting glare and most of the heat. Solid PVC and canvas stop the lot, rain included, so they suit a patio you want closed in over winter. A darker mesh gives a clearer view out than a light colour in the same openness.
Guides that hold the edges
The sides do the work. Side channels screwed to posts or walls hold the fabric hard in wind. A wire guide is tidier and suits narrower drops. Zip track runs the fabric in a groove down both edges and stays put in gusts. How exposed the opening is, and how square it is, decides which one belongs there.
Spring, crank or motor
A spring roller suits a small opening you raise a couple of times a day. A crank handle gives steady control on a heavy blind and needs no power at all. A motor is worth it on wide spans, upstairs balconies, or anywhere you would rather not walk outside to close up. Power has to be there first.
What to sort out before you order
Opening. Measure between the posts, not along the roof line. A blind fixed under the beam and one fixed to the face of it finish up different widths.
Fabric. Mesh for shade and breeze, solid for weather. Pick it on how you use the area, not on how it looks in the sample book.
Guides. Channel, wire or zip track. Wind exposure and how square the opening is will narrow that down fast.
Operation. Spring, crank or motor. If you want a motor, work out where the power is coming from before anything is ordered.
Clearance. Brackets need room. Gutters, downpipes and light fittings all want the same corner as the blind, so it pays to check before any holes go in.

Common questions
Will an outdoor roller blind stop rain coming onto my patio?
A mesh blind cuts wind-driven rain a long way, but water still passes through the weave. If you want the area properly dry, ask about a clear PVC or a tight acrylic canvas blind instead. Either way, roll the blind up in a storm. They are built for sun and a breeze, not for heavy gusts off the back fence.
How do outdoor blinds handle salt air near the beach?
Coastal jobs eat cheap hardware. We use marine-grade stainless fixings and powder-coated aluminium components on anything within a few streets of the water, and we fix into solid brick or timber rather than render alone. Rinse the tracks with fresh water every few months and the mechanism keeps running smoothly.
What is the difference between a mesh outdoor blind and a clear PVC one?
Mesh knocks back glare and heat while you still see out, and air moves through it, so the space does not get stuffy. Clear PVC blocks wind and rain and keeps a patio usable in winter, but it traps heat in summer. A lot of Sydney alfresco areas end up with mesh on the sunny side and PVC on the weather side.
Can outdoor roller blinds be motorised?
Yes, and on a wide opening it is worth it. A motor runs the blind evenly across a span that is heavy to pull by hand, and you can add a sun or wind sensor so the blind retracts before a gust hits. We plan the cable run during the measure, so allow for power near the top of the opening.
How is an outdoor blind held down at the bottom?
Three common ways. A spring-loaded channel guide down each side, a zip track that holds the fabric under tension, or a rope and cleat with eyelets fixed into the deck. Channel and zip systems hold up much better in wind and stop the blind flapping. We pick based on the width and how exposed the area is.
