Cronulla has two problems most of Sydney does not. The first is salt. Air off Bate Bay carries it a long way in, and it goes after metal. Chains, brackets and bottom rail fixings on a blind facing the water want stainless fixings and a proper powder coated finish. On a badly exposed balcony we will often steer you to a motorised roller shutter instead of an outdoor blind, because less hardware sits out in the weather.
The second is glare. A west facing balcony over Gunnamatta Bay picks up low sun off the water from about four, and it comes in under the eaves where an awning does nothing. A sunscreen roller keeps the view across to Kurnell and cuts the worst of it. Older units here often have shallow reveals, sometimes 40mm or less, so the bracket gets face fixed or the blind fouls the window handle.
A lot of blind companies are wholesale retailers. They buy blinds in, add their margin, and you get whatever the wholesaler had in the rack that week. Our roller blinds are made in our own Sydney factory, so the tube, the fabric and the brackets get picked for your opening. A wide lounge span gets a heavier tube so the blind does not sag through the middle. A tight reveal gets a slim bracket.
You deal with the same people the whole way through. Steve measures, the factory builds it, and it goes in. If a wall is out of plumb or a slider track sits proud of the render, that gets sorted on the day instead of going back to a third party. Child safe chain tensioners go on wherever they belong.
We do not have a shop in Cronulla. We come to you, which works better anyway. Fabric reads completely differently on a north facing kitchen window than it does under shop lights, and you cannot judge how open a sunscreen is until you hold it against the glass you are trying to cover. Pick a time, we bring the samples, measure every opening and leave you a written quote. For most houses the visit takes under an hour.
Most weeks we are somewhere between Cronulla and Sutherland, so getting to you is no trouble. We work through Woolooware, Burraneer, Lilli Pilli, Dolans Bay and Caringbah South, up through Caringbah and Miranda, and out to Kurnell and Taren Point. Units, townhouses, older brick homes and new builds, all of it. Common questions
Do you come to Cronulla to measure?
Yes. There is no shop to visit, so the samples come to you. You see the fabrics in your own light, against your own glass, with the glare you actually live with. Cronulla is a short run for us and we cover the whole Shire. Pick a time that suits, after work if that is easier, and we measure every window while we are there.
Does the salt air near the beach wreck blinds?
It goes after the metal parts long before the fabric. Standard brackets and chains close to the water pit and stiffen within a few years, so on beachside jobs we specify stainless fixings and powder coated components and keep raw steel out of the window. Salt settles on the fabric too. A wipe with a damp cloth every few months helps.
What works best for the glare off the water?
Light bouncing off sand and water comes at you from below, not just through the top of the window. A dense sunscreen, around three percent openness, knocks it back and still holds the view. Sheers wash out in that light. On a balcony we often run a sunscreen for the day and a blockout for sleeping.
My unit has very shallow window reveals. What can you fit?
Plenty of the older Cronulla blocks have reveals barely deep enough for one bracket, with an aluminium slider and a handle sitting in the way. A slimline bracket and a smaller tube often fit where a standard set will not. If it is still too tight, we face fix above the reveal so the blind clears the handle.
Does strata have a say in what blinds I put in?
Usually yes, on anything the street or the common area sees. Most blocks set the colour of the backing that faces out, so every window reads the same from outside. Check your by-laws first. Because we make our roller blinds in our own Sydney factory, we can match a required backing and still give you the fabric you want inside.
